More From My Street

How green is my street? Its colors are sheer joy.

And now, a little game to entertain us over the weekend. Look at the picture of the intersection of Ocean Park and Lincoln (right), just a few blocks from where I live.
Can you spot something wrong/odd?

The shoes dangling from the telephone wires..?

...used be a warning sign that someone had died; no longer needing there shoes. Not so cute.

Mary-Laure said...

TERI - really, I had no idea that used to mean a death.
Yes, they are dangling from the telephone wires, way up HIGH. I wonder HOW they got there.

The shoe thing here means "crack house nearby". Not death.

I'm glad you're loving your neighbourhood this week.

What a lush street!

An invisible person wearing a sneaker in the sky. I wonder where he is going?

Mary-Laure said...

CLEVER PUP - hmmmmm, really? It's a pretty fancy neighborhood, on that side of Lincoln.
I'm horrified - I thought that pair of sneakers was just a joke and it turns out it could mean death, or a crackhouse!!!! How terrible!

J ELAINE - wherever he went, he went barefoot, as both sneakers are hanging from the telephone wire.

What a green surrounding. I am sure Benjy is loving it!

The shoe thing can mean both, in the town near here there are a pair of child's shoes hung over a road where he was knocked down and killed.

There are also a pair of shoes hung outside the local crack house.

Strange world.

No idea what's wrong with the picture :/

... Well that shows how awake I'm not this morning ....

There's a running shoe hanging from the sky!

Just read over the other comments - you learn something new (gruesome) every day...

Maybe the Oracle knows the signification of sneakers hanging on a wire that side of Lincoln... If anyone knows the importance of territorial markings it is HE!

I prefer to believe it's a disguised UFO...

Hmmm, we see lots of sneakers on wires around here...but I thought the wrong/odd thing was that there were pedestrians, I heard nobody walks anywhere in LA......goes to show what I know!!!

Mary-Laure said...

J ELAINE - your comment made me laugh out loud!

ANONYMOUS - EXCELLENT!

D. MOLL - HA, yet another cliché about LA! Here in Venice, and in Santa Monica, people walk a lot. I walk to the supermarket, to the café, to stores, to my fave bookstore.
Everything you need is so close that my neighbor doesn't even HAVE a car. Really.

Wow, you live in such a gorgeous place.

is it a running shoe??? but so high up!

Mary-Laure said...

NANCY - yep, it's a running shoe. The pair is hanging from a telephone wire, way WAY up high...

They say the same here, dangling shoes=drug dealer place.

Your street is lovely Mary-Laure!

I'd never heard the death thing before and I grew up in Los Angeles :) but I have heard about the drug thing. It's supposed to indicate that they sell drugs nearby though not necessarily crack. Maybe cocaine? Much classier right? (heehe) But also, it means that there's probably some bored kids around who thought it would be funny to throw their shoes up...

PS. You have an award!xo

Mary-Laure said...

KARINA - I had no idea... you'd think I've been living in rural Kentucky all my life or something...

GABBI - my bet is on bored teenagers, because it's really not a crackhouse kind of neighborhood, you know, it's fancy Santa Monica with manicured gardens and clean cars.
An award? For MOI? Oh, thank you, Gabbi, you're the sweetest!

Mary-Laure said...

SOLANGE - the "thing in the air" is a running shoe, hanging from a telephone wire. It's very high, so it looks just crazy.
Actually, I was inspired by YOUR blog to show my own home...

You can call me Betty, or Bethany, or Beth ...Just don't call me late for dinner. said...

In Park City Utah thee are a tone of Dangling Shoes... but I doubt that either of those things apply there.

Of course I am quite Naive!

I used to live on Brooks Ave and hung out at the Rose Cafe. They had really good croissant and very strong coffee 23 years ago.

That shoe is fabulous - I thought it was a seaplane until I enlarged the photo! How funny!

And where I live, shoes hanging from a wire are a sign of a wild party the night before.

Mary-Laure said...

BITTERBETTY - I love hanging out at the Rose café! I was there on Saturday afternoon for a little treat. I hope you visit LA very soon... Any plans?

Bri said...

Is that a jetski?

Mary-Laure said...

BRI - LOL, no, it's a running shoe. The pair is hanging from a telephone wire. It's really very high. Pretty crazy, no?

Alya said...

I thought it was an airplane, or a blimp. I found out from the comments that it was a shoe! Oh my God I have the poorest eyesight!

Mary-Laure said...

ALYA - I know, at first glance it totally looks like a plane - or a UFO.
