New York Favorites

New York loves its dancers! Especially around the Lincoln Center (66th st W). That NYCB ballerina is beautiful but where's the turn-out?

New York loves Japanese noodles! At the teeny restaurant Totto (52nd st W between 8th & 9th), I had a delicious vegetarian noodle soup.

New York loves art! The Frick collection is not just one of my favorite museums in the world. It's also one of my favorite places - the art is displayed in Mr Frick's home, so luxurious yet cozy.

New York loves being a little crazy! A wood horse and hippo went for a ride around the city last week...

LAURA - you would love it too, if you gave it a chance. Hopefully one day we can spend some time here together.

Yes, quite right... where is the turn-out? Lovely seeing a place through your eyes, from posters to treats tasted.

friends of mine are soon headed for New York and now I wish all the more that I could fit in their cases.

Mary-Laure, Bon Jour! I have arrived via Annie's blog. Love reading about your travels... I spent many a year doing just that... but have been grounded after a break-up with my Ex. (We are - oops - "were" Opera people...but I do love Ballet too.)

I spent years in NYC (now in San Francisco) and miss it a lot.
I LOVE the Frick....always my favourite Museum....and sometimes, just liked to sit in the courtyard where the fountain is and just dream.... thank you for bringing me a lovely memory.

Makes me want to hop on the bus right now. I could be there for dinner...but too icky. Hot. You'd have to pull me 'round in a red wagon or something. lol

I'm looking at old NYC ballet flyer...do you remember? Black & white only. I'll look for it & post in September. You girls are so darn picky (about the turn out...but yeah, I know). I'm rather interested in that soup...is that a pickle on there? Maybe Laura can tell us a good place to find out how to put something like that together at home. Only one place I like in DC & it is a noodle front shop but it is sooooooooo hot & bad air today.

Hey, M-L. Watch out. Hurricane Earl is headed for us both (in terms of wind & rain. Stock up on your batteries, download podcasts, & recharge iPod, speaker, etc.).

Read in stentorian film trailer voice: "In a world filled with fear & rotten weather, one lone ballerina-girl braved the dark city. Alone but for her noodle soup. "

hugs

GRACIA - I often have that fantasy too, of sneaking into a friend's luggage for a trip...

ROBIN - I'm delighted to welcome you on AUREA!
Yes, the Frick is magical, with that fountain. It's an oasis of peace in a throbbing busy city.
But it's wonderful you're in San Francisco now, such a beautiful place!

GIULIA - it's hot here too and I still wonder how I could actually have that soup last weekend. It was delicious though. No pickles - that's zucchini on top of the noodles. It also came with a wedge of green lime, which gave the soup a fresh, tangy taste. Yum.
I wish you were here. Sigh.
I love your "stentorian voice" mock-trailer! Though if Earl hits, I won't be laughing anymore.
Un bacio for Signorina Giulia.

Loving your NYC posts. So are you no longer a part time californian? Also loved your summer in paris pics but I guess I must have missed a part of the story. Glad you are enjoying the city.

SEALAURA - Actually, I'm going back to LA next week but may have to return to NYC some time later in the month. My work plans are a bit crazy right now!
But I still call LA my home!

JULIE - I'd love to visit Sydney too. My sister went there once and she just adored it.

When I was a boy I was discovered and received an offer to go to the New Yourk Ballet school...... boy that bring back memories.

Mary-Laure said...

SIMON - wow, do you mean SAB (School of American Ballet)???? You must have been OUTSTANDINGLY gifted indeed! I'm most impressed.
I hope you still like ballet......

I am not sure of its name it was a long time ago.

I do recall the New York Ballet Theatre as a name. Their principal dancer was a negro man (sorry if thats not quite an appropriate word now I cannot remember his name).
He was in Australia using our dance school studio to train in. and his manager spotted me, asked me to do some things, asked me to watch what he did to a piece of music and repeat it ( which I did) and thats when the offer came via my dance teacher Joan Halliday....

Love the NYC Ballet + the poster image is lovely! Thanks for sharing.

SIMON - I think the black dancer you are referring to was Arthur Mitchell - does the name sound familiar?
You must have been an extremely promising young dancer to have received such an offer. I have friends who tried to get into SAB and they were rejected.
I hope that you are still a dance lover!
