Weekend Gourmand
From top: pure pomegranate juice, snap peas and cherry tomatoes (all from the Venice Farmers' Market), Syrah wine.
What does the word gourmand (see title of my post) mean? It's very difficult, if not impossible to translate into English. Basically, it's used to refer to someone who enjoys eating. But a gourmand is not necessarily a gourmet - a gourmand is not always picky about the quality and complexity of the food. It is more of a simple hedonistic quality; a gourmand always wants more, but there are no negative connotations (a gourmand is not a glouton!).
For instance, yesterday at Stella's in Silverlake when I poured gallons of maple syrup on my lemon ricotta pancakes, I was really being a gourmande...

Yes, I'm much more of a gourmand than a gourmet. I love the scene in Julie and Julia where Julia Child and her husband wonder about what she should do with her life. Her husband asks her: what is it you really like to do? and she answers: eat! That is so me!
You can see the clip here.

CARINA - there you are, you are a gourmande! I'm not much of a true gourmet myself... I find that often gourmets are a bit snobbish, you know...
Yes, exactly! They are!
I think I am one!
I try to be gourmet but am often gourmande!
I too am a pourer of gallons of maple syrup. We must have that in common. This post gave such inspiration to my rumbling tummy.. not too sure if thats a good thing though lol ;)

I wondered what the first image was, it looked like jelly when I first looked at it!
I 'm not a gourmet, but love good foods. Comfort foods. Humm, off to the store!
xo,P
I adore this definition.
PENNEY - if you love comfort foods, you are definitely a Gourmande!
great post.....http://webconnecttechnologies.com/about_us.php
I am one for sure, as Julie-Giulia. The colors in the photographs are lovely...particularly the reds. (And I love the octopus on the Syrah label...)
I'm more of a gourmand myself than a gourmet. Sometimes gourmets tend to be a little elitist.
Those photographs...mmmm....sumptuous!
GIULIA - I wonder what your favorite treats are, dear Giulia. I've never had a cat no I don't know what they love most - fish, I guess?
KEITH - yes, sometimes I feel like a gourmet would wrinkle his/her nose at my favorite foods.......
I've been instructed to answer for Giulia, Mary-Laure. (She's asleep.)
She loathes fish, as have all my cats (as an adult). The cats I've seen who like fish as their sole food hang out in marina areas & so on. I think that might be an adaptation, since all (l'il) cats descend from a maman in the Libyan desert.
Giulia apparently likes to pretend that she has felled a creature on her own, as a lioness would. No fishing. But what can one do? It is her nature.
She's the first cat I've known, though, who does not like treats. (It's how she maintains her girlish figure:)
Cheers.
PS: I love Gustavo on NPR.
GIULIA - ah, I was sure that this kitty's "gourmandise" would be very special...
I can imagine Giulia meowing approvingly as she listens to NPR.
A girl after my own heart. I love, love, LOVE to eat. It's the cooking that I still struggle with. Julia Child didn't start cooking until she was 30, so there's still hope for me yet!
